Admissions

Admission is extended to all men and women of any race who are serious in their intent to “study to show themselves approved unto God, workmen who need not to be ashamed rightly dividing the word of truth.” (II Tim. 2:15)  The College warmly welcomes both full and part-time students whether they are single, married, young or old. Each applicant must be able to satisfy the College that he or she is:

  • Of good moral character and in agreement with the special Christian character of the South Pacific Bible College.
  • Proficient in the English language (International students will be required to pass the SPBC English Assessment exam or provide verifiable evidence of proficiency).

Verification of the above will be done through such means as personal interviews, documentation, examination and written testimonials or referrals. Applicants must complete and sign an Admissions Application, available from the Administration Office, approximately three months before the earliest possible entry date.

Additional information may be requested during the subsequent enrolment process if it is required. When enrolment requirements have been processed, students will be advised in writing of acceptance decision.

The right of admission is at the sole discretion of the Administration or their representatives.  In addition, admissions into the Diploma in Christian Ministry Programme will require students’ signatures to contractual agreements with Supervisors and Churches with whom they will be working.

Housing

Assistance may be given to applicants to find suitable housing and accommodation.  Applicants requiring assistance should present their needs to the Dean of Students early.  The Dean is generally available on site on a daily basis.  The College has some accommodation of its own depending on availability.   The costs range from $180-200 per week for one bedroom apartment to $360 per week for 3 bedroom apartment.  Cost includes electricity, phone and water.  This accommodation has been assessed by SPBC and is adequate in regards to safety and location.

There are other types of accommodation in the city of Tauranga besides the ones assessed by the College.  These can include:

  • Flatting– This is shared rental accommodation and can vary from two to five bedroom houses with their own facilities.  A student can expect to pay between $80 to $100 per week for a place in a flat.  Costs for food, electricity , phone and water are in addition to this.  There are several rental agencies that can be located by using an internet search engine and typing in “house rental Tauranga”.  The Dean of Students may also be able to help applicants find local flatting situations.
  • Boarding (Homestay)- This is when a student lives with a family.  This can vary between $150-$200 per week. Usually electricity, phone, water and food are included in the total cost.  The Dean of Students may be able to assist students in finding local homestay situations.

Fees and Finance

Details of course fees are found in the Student Information Booklet obtainable from the College upon request.  The Administration reserves the right to an annual review of these fees in accordance with costs.

Living costs for single students for one year are approximately    NZ$12-14,000.  Each student is responsible for his/her own financial support.  The administration and faculty are available to advise students in their fund-raising efforts.

Student Loans and Allowances

New Zealand students who may be eligible for student allowance and/or loans need to apply directly to Study Link.    Permanent residents and Australian citizens may also be eligible under certain criteria.  In all cases refer to Study Link at www.studylink.govt.nz

Requests for financial discounts can be made in writing to the Dean of Students.  Any discounts are provided only according to the availability of additional funds, approval of the College Administration and according to stated criteria. A fund is available for temporary assistance for emergencies that may occur.  Graduates are encouraged to make some financial contribution for the assistance of future students.

Health and Travel Insurance

Eligibility for Health Services for International Students

Most international students are not entitled to publicly funded health services while in New Zealand and may be liable for full costs of medical treatment. Full details on entitlements to publicly funded health services are available through the Ministry of Health, and can be viewed on their website at: www.moh.govt.nz

Accident Insurance for International Students

Although accident insurance is provided for all New Zealand citizens, residents, and temporary visitors to New Zealand there may be liability for other medical and related costs.  Further information can be viewed on the ACC website at:www.acc.co.nz

Medical and Travel Insurance for International Students

International students must have appropriate and current medical and travel insurance while studying in New Zealand.  All medical and travel insurance policies must be verified by the Dean of Students prior to the student’s entry into New Zealand.

Special Note for Australian Students and Health Care

Although Australian citizens are entitled to some medical coverage in New Zealand, SPBC recommends students consider purchasing International Students Insurance which covers unexpected costs such as emergency repatriation, lost luggage, dental, optometry, etc.  Without insurance coverage these costs are the rewponsibility of the student.  Please contact the Dean of Students with any questions.

Immigration

SPBC may only enrol international students if the student holds a current student visa or permit endorsing SPBC and the intended course of study.  If the international student applies but does not hold the proper permit or visa then SPBC must inform the prospective student of the requirement to obtain one.

Upon acceptance international students are responsible to make their own application to the New Zealand Immigration Service. Full details of visa and permit requirements, advice on right to employment in New Zealand while studying, and reporting requirements are available through the New Zealand Immigration Service, and can be viewed on their website at http://www.immigration.govt.nz

Under section 40(1) of the Immigration Act 1987 SPBC is legally required to refuse or terminate enrolment of any perspective or current student not holding the required permits.

SPBC must follow New Zealand Immigration Service (NZIS) guidelines and advise NZIS if an international student’s enrolment has been terminated.
